Marites Carino – Handshack
In collaboration with Festival Accès Asie
In this world of instant communication, our first contact with people is often virtual, either through the Internet, telephone, texts or e-mail. All day we swipe screens, type on keyboards and punch buttons. Our overuse of electronics reduces daily opportunity for human contact and diminishes our ability to be present when face-to-face.
Handshack is an interactive installation that invites human connection. This intimate piece captures candid, real-time encounters between two strangers who get to know each other solely through touch. Using the handshake as a starting point, blind tactile conversations are twisted into unexpected choreographies.

Emmanuelle Choquette
Spaces in Between
As part of the M&M residency program, Montreal-based curator Emmanuelle Choquette will be welcomed by the Laboratorio de Arte Alameda.
In her research, she is interested in the politics of exhibition and installation spaces, while investigating the artists’ current relationship with the institution, the production and dissemination system and the various actors who act as collaborators, such as curators. The main focus of her research is on artists who activate the installation form as an anchor in space, and offer a critical look at the exhibition, its mechanisms and symbolic scope, while challenging the notion of site specificity.
Residency from April 16 to May 25, 2019
