A Quarter of Half the Void | Manuela Lalic
Exhibition September 14 to October 19, 2019
Opening Saturday, September 14, 2019, 5 p.m.
The backbone of this project is composed of used tables found in the street. By asserting the idea of a heterogeneous collective but tightly woven, they impose a point of view in opposition to an installation device made of sections of individual actions waiting to be assembled. Marked by our habits of life based on programmed obsolescence, my field of action goes through a deployment of energy that runs empty. By caricaturing the foundations of the sculpture that operates by adding and / or subtracting material, my actions contradict each other: add to divide, cut to complete, inlay to hollow out, remove to wall up. A Quarter of Half the Void is a tragicomic exploratory site which refers to our capitalist society that prefabricates and standardizes our desires and needs. The sculptural and the action are anchored in a combinatorial logic: ergonomic sections are built by ricochet effects. As if in Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin stuck in the rhythm of an assembly line thought for his body, voluntarily provokes accidents. Read more

With this project, I study how the different aspects of the creation experience are related. I am looking to develop a quality of attention. Thus, I observe the nature of the relationships between the body, the mind and the environment, from the point of view of the woman that I am. Attention is one of the central links of a chain of actions: a sequence that relieves choice, intention, attention, gesture and care, to name only these. This chain is the bridge between my inner life and my commitment to the world; the articulation between personal and collective dimensions. There is the question of the act looking itself, the one of looking at oneself looking and making, in order to perceive what happens beyond the surface, so that the attention engages itself and becomes responsible of the interactions that make up the experience. I linger on the role of manual work and attention in the process of awareness and the development of a caring attitude. Concretely, the project will be presented as an installation where photographs and clay sculptures in dialogue unfold in the gallery space. Images and sculptures reflect the object of observation that is the creative practice and its capacity to activate new relationships.
