This long-term workshop (44 hours) given by Erin Weisgerber will survey the approach of experimental and material filmmaking for the low price of 271$ (including materials). We will explore a series of techniques for engaging with the materiality of film: with its photographic, chemical, and physical properties. The hands-on workshop will focus on 16 mm silent filmmaking (while discussing sound) and include teaching on shooting 16mm film, hand processing, direct animations, working with found footage, optical printing, and projecting. In addition to hands-on exercises, we will discuss the aesthetic and conceptual implications of this type of filmmaking and view short films that exemplify a range of possibilities. Participants will be provided with readings that situate historical and contemporary experimental filmmaking practices. The participants will also overview the distribution of experimental and material cinema with Videographe’s Jade Wiseman. By the end of the workshop, participants should have the skills necessary to complete and present a silent 16mm film.
This small group workshop (8 participants) will be taught in English and take place between November 23rd and December 15th (see detailed calendar below). The workshop include 2 hours of one-on-one mentorship following this period.
