This training aims to improve the knowledge, uses and project proposals of artists and cultural organizations in media arts. It focuses specifically on descriptive metadata, the data that describes cultural offerings and the technological means that allow them to be exploited to promote research and discovery.
The trainer will address the essential notions and concepts of the use of descriptive data in the cultural milieu and will answer your practical questions. You will learn about the specific objectives of structured data for search engines and open and linked data (semantic web). More concretely, you will be able to evaluate the quality of content documentation on your web sites and identify the most appropriate use of your metadata according to your objectives and your means.
By applying your new knowledge through various exercises, you will be able to :
- See how search engines use metadata and Wikipedia to understand the content of a web page;
- Perform tests to validate the presence of structured data for search engines on web pages;
- Understand why there are a growing number of open and linked data projects in culture;
- Understand what type of data production and use project best meets your objectives.
- Understand the key elements of a web page that enhance a work or a catalog, for humans and machines.
By the end of the workshop, the participating artists and media arts cultural organizations will have acquired the knowledge mentioned above, thus improving their use of the data according to their specific objectives and projects.

TRAINER | Josée Plamondon
Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences, MBA. A trained librarian and specialist in information systems and databases, Josée has contributed to projects aimed at data interoperability and sharing, indexing content for processing by machines and sharing knowledge. As a consultant, she provides content creators and producers facing the challenges of digital technology with an understanding of information dynamics and how to use the data that describes their content. Since 2016, she has co-organized an annual conference on the Semantic Web in Quebec.
