Eastern Bloc: Introduction To 3D Animation With Blender

14 - 28 November 2020
  • 3-Day Workshop by Anna Eyler
  • On saturday november 14, 21 et 28th 2020
  • Member: 125$|| Student: 165$ || Régular: 175$

DESCRIPTION:

This 3-day workshop will provide an introduction to animation in Blender: a professional, open-source software for 3D modelling and animation. Participants will learn how to model and animate 3D objects to create their own video. The first day will include an introduction to 3D software, focusing on the Blender interface and basic 3D modelling tools. On the second day, participants will learn how to rig and animate their own 3D-modelled object. The final day will focus on how to properly light and render out a video of an animated, 3D-modelled object. Online resources, support communities, and further learning will be covered throughout the workshop.

SCHEDULE:

DAY 1 – INTRODUCTION TO 3D MODELLING

  • Context – 3D modelling in contemporary art
  • 3D Tools – Types of 3D modelling softwares  and their applications
  • Interface – Blender GUI, keyboard shortcuts, interface customization
  • Basic modelling – edit mode, sculpting tools, and modifiers

DAY 2 – RIGGING AND ANIMATING

  • Rigging characters and objects (skeletons and bones)
  • Animation using rigged objects and the animation timeline
  • 3D Simulations (water, fire)
  • Integrating Motion Capture (mocap) data (if time permits)

DAY 3 – LIGHTING AND RENDERING

  • Lighting systems (Blender vs. Cycles)
  • Camera (aperture, focal length)
  • Rendering workflow (de-noising, sample counts)
  • Additional resources (material libraries, tutorials, 3D models)

Anna Eyler is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal. She received her BFA from the University of Ottawa in 2015 and has been an MFA candidate in Sculpture and Ceramics at Concordia University since 2017. Eyler’s artistic practice is focused on the phenomena of digital materiality and its influences on our perceptions of the natural world. She has received several awards for her research including the Desjardins Academic Scholarship (2018) and the Emerging Digital Artist Award (2018).

Anna Eyler is disciplined in sculpture, new media and performance art. Eyler’s practice is reliant on virtual 3D modeling and animation. Through disciplined adjustments in animation and design, Eyler will play with the traditional material perspective of natural objects bringing the object’s material identities into question. Utilizing sculpture, Eyler’s work has carved virtual scenes and natural elements into physical space. Drawing on performance and electronics Eyler has explored our immaterial relationship with the environment and technologies’ influence.
