Call for applicants: CQAM/TURBULENT Residency

The Conseil québécois des arts médiatiques (CQAM) and Montreal-based company Turbulent are inviting applications for the 5th CQAM-TURBULENT Residency. This residency offers professional artists or artist collectives a unique opportunity to produce or finalize a project with Turbulent’s specialized team. 

The residency will take place between February 2021 and December 2021, for a total of 300 hours of support. The artist will be invited to arrange his or her schedule with the company at the beginning of the project. The artist’s residency must be completed by December 31, 2021.

During the residency, Turbulent provides its human resources, space and equipment. The offices in Turbulent will be accessible if the current health situation allows it. If not, a virtual accompaniment will be set up for the artist. The selected artist or collective will be able to develop their creative process in an innovative way based on Turbulent’s specialties: software development, Web applications or numeric platforms. 

The artist will have access to the latest technologies in the industry while relying on the support of qualified developers selected according to the technological specificities of the project.

The artist will receive a $10,000 fee, distributed over the period of the residency. This residency is made possible thanks to the support of the Conseil des arts de Montréal.

Created and piloted by CQAM, the residency aims to provide a research and creation space for professional digital artists and to stimulate dialogue with the various players in the digital environment.

The residency project will take place in three phases

Phase 1: Research and creation. Duration: 3 months 
The selected artist begin an exploration of avenues for the development of the project. 

Phase 2: Prototyping. Duration: 3 to 4 months 
With the support of the company’s team, the artist is working on the development of a prototype.  

Phase 3: Realization of a work or project. Duration: 4 to 5 months 
The last phase of the project, which can vary according to needs, will allow the artist accompanied by the team to finalize the realization of the project. A presentation in front of the public (or virtual) will complete the program.

In addition to a MAC workstation, this residency gives access to the following equipment:

  • Websites (media, videos, e-commerce, social-inscriptions, users)
  • Web services and API

Databases and management tools

  • React

Real time (websocket)

  • Live event synchronization
  • Real-time data sending  

Software

  • Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition…)

 

Eligibility

This residency is open to professional digital artists or arts collectives who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents. This residency is not open to emerging artists. The selected artist must have a clear idea of his or her project and knowledge of the tools mentioned above. The artist or collective must be available to carry out the residency between February 2021 and December 2021. A schedule will be set up with the company at the beginning of the project. An artist or collective that has already presented a project in previous years can apply with a new project.

 

Selection Criteria and Evaluation Process

In order to determine three finalists, a jury composed of representatives from CQAM, Turbulent, the Conseil des arts de Montréal and external professionals will evaluate the proposals submitted according to the following criteria:

  • Notoriety. Quality of the candidate’s work and artistic approach (20%);
  • Technique. Expertise required at Turbulent and required equipment (20%)
  • Concept. Project (technical and artistic), feasibility and originality (40%)
  • Afterwards, an interview with Turbulent representatives will determine the artist or collective selected. (20%)

 

Ownership of rights

The selected artist or collective remains the owner of all rights to the submitted project and the final result at the end of the residency.
