General Assembly for Media Arts in Gaspésie

ONLINE, Saturday May 15 and Sunday May 16

The film festival Les Percéides and la Grande rencontre des arts médiatiques en Gaspésie are very happy to announce the historical first General Assembly for Media Arts in Gaspésie, which will take place ONLINE, Saturday May 15 and Sunday May 16.

TO PROMOTE AND RECOGNIZE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RELATED TO MEDIA AND DIGITAL ARTS IN GASPÉSIE
.

The first General Assembly for Media Arts in Gaspésie, taking place ONLINE on May 15 and 16, 2021, will make history. This exceptional meeting is an invitation to those working in the field of cultural action, to engage in an exchange of views, based on an inventory of media and digital arts in Gaspésie, in order to work together to define a true “charter” of media cultural action in the region.

One of the objectives of the general assembly is to discuss practices in the field and to define key issues, in order to identify the strategic lines of a structuring commitment to the development of media and digital arts in Gaspésie. The Festival Les Percéides and the Grande rencontre des arts médiatiques en Gaspésie, as annual events, position themselves as federating bodies for the whole of film and media practices in Gaspésie, with the aim of being able to address professional and political leaders about the defined key issues.

In addition to attending inspiring presentations from these artists and artisans, we will travel to different sites to visit audacious digital art projects such as:

At the Musée de la Gaspésie we will meet Katherine Yockell, head of animation, who will show us an exhibition using digital technologies. We’ll visit the exhibition Le grand large, which tells the story of Gaspésie through fifteen sailboats, Viking drakkars to the Gaspesians, passing through Micmac deep sea canoes. The current exhibition uses augmented reality, virtual reality, and holograms.

In Matane, we’ll meet curator Gilles Artaud, who will guide us through a current exhibition from PHOS, a photographic and digital event which begins its eight edition on May 14, in Gaspésie.

Finally, we’ll meet Myriam Achard, from the PHI Centre in Montreal, who will present the context of Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s digital work, Carne y arena, an exceptional and gripping immersive virtual reality experience which had its world premiere at the Cannes Festival and is currently being presented at l’Arsenal, in Montreal.

SCRIPTING THE FUTURE

Recommendations and a brief will be written in order to promote and recognize professional development related to media arts and “the seventh art” in Gaspésie. “Welcome participants and pathfinders. Let’s write a new page in the history of media arts and independent film in the region together,” declares François Cormier, initiator of the event, co-delegate of the General Assembly of Media Arts in Gaspésie and founder, general and artistic director of the Festival Les Percéides and of the Grande rencontre des arts médiatiques en Gaspésie.

“This general assembly will give us the opportunity to reflect, together, on current practices and issues surrounding media arts in the region. I’m convinced that discussion and exchange about media art in Gaspésie will open up new opportunities for fruitful collaboration,” declares Esther Bourdages, co-delegate of the General Assembly for Media Arts in Gaspésie and curator of the Grande rencontre des arts médiatiques en Gaspésie.

Director and professor of cinema and philosophy Alexandra Guité, a native of Percé, will act as moderator and cultural mediator for the event. About the event, she states: “If we can’t all be together in the Gaspésie, energized by the ocean spray, let’s seize this virtual opportunity to better understand the state of our artistic fields, to establish precious collaborations and to open new creative horizons.”
